Medical scrubs for women: fit, sizing, and what to specify for a mixed-gender ward

Medical scrubs for women: fit, sizing, and what to specify for a mixed-gender ward

A bulk scrub order specified as “unisex, sizes XS to XXL” reads like it has covered every buyer on the ward. It hasn’t. It has covered a range of body sizes on one cut, and that cut is a men’s block scaled up and down, not a garment drafted for a woman’s proportions.

This is for hospital and nursing college procurement teams who buy scrub sets in bulk for a majority-women clinical staff, which is most Indian wards.

What a unisex size actually is

A unisex scrub top is cut straight through the body, with the size steps moving the whole garment up or down uniformly. It fits a range of body types adequately and none of them precisely, because it has no waist shaping and no bust allowance built in. On a woman’s frame this produces two complaints at once from the same size label: loose and boxy through the middle, while still tight or gaping oddly at the shoulder and neckline. Ward staff usually solve this themselves by ordering a size up and belting or tucking the excess, which is not a fit, it’s a workaround.

What a genuine women’s cut changes

A women’s-fit scrub top is a different pattern, not the unisex pattern in smaller numbers:

  • Waist darts or princess seams, which take in the fabric at the waist so the top follows the body instead of hanging as a rectangle.
  • A narrower shoulder and armhole, matched to a woman’s frame rather than a scaled-down men’s one.
  • Repositioned chest pockets, set higher and closer together than a unisex layout, so they sit correctly rather than pulling sideways.
  • A separate trouser rise and hip curve, cut for a woman’s proportions rather than a straight men’s leg scaled down.

None of this is about a tighter or more revealing fit. It’s about the garment following the body closely enough that it doesn’t bunch, gape, or need constant readjustment through a 12-hour shift.

Why sizing charts fail specifically in India

Generic scrub size charts, including most unisex ones sold in India, are built against the body proportions the brand’s home market, usually not Indian, and applied here without adjustment. The mismatch shows up as a S/M/L system where the numbers on the label don’t track actual chest, waist or height in a way that predicts fit for an Indian ward. The fix is not a better chart. It’s a fit sample approved on your own staff before the bulk run, and a size grid built from that sample rather than trusted from a supplier’s generic sheet.

What to specify on the order

  • Order the women’s cut as its own line item, not as “unisex, smaller sizes.” If your supplier doesn’t offer a distinct women’s pattern, ask directly before ordering; a relabelled unisex range is not the same product.
  • Run a fit sample on two or three staff across your actual size range before the bulk cut, not just one middle size.
  • Specify fabric with stretch content (a small percentage of spandex or elastane in the poly-cotton blend) for the fitted cut specifically, since a shaped garment with zero stretch restricts movement in a way a loose unisex one doesn’t.
  • Size the trouser separately from the top. Height and hip proportions don’t move together predictably, and a woman’s trouser needs its own size grid rather than being paired automatically with the top size.
  • Confirm maternity or adjustable-waist options if your staff turnover includes this, since it’s a common gap in standard bulk ranges and cheaper to specify upfront than to special-order later.

Ordering both cuts on one purchase order

A ward is rarely all one gender, and the practical answer is one PO with both cuts specified by headcount, not two separate negotiations. Confirm the fabric lot and colour match across both cuts so a unisex top and a women’s-fit top from the same order are indistinguishable in colour on the ward, even though the patterns differ.

How we supply scrubs in bulk

We supply scrub sets, in both unisex and women’s-fit cuts, to hospitals, diagnostic chains and nursing colleges across India, from 50 sets.

  • Women’s-fit pattern with waist shaping, offered as a distinct line, not a relabelled unisex size.
  • Fit sample approved on your own staff before the bulk cut.
  • Trouser and top sized independently.
  • Colour and fabric lot held on file so unisex and women’s-fit cuts match across reorders.
