Hospital uniform minimum order quantity: what 50 pieces covers
“Fifty pieces” is a number procurement teams ask about early, and it’s worth answering plainly rather than burying it in a quotation call. This covers what the minimum actually means for a hospital’s first order, and the reorder question that matters more once that first order is placed.
What 50 pieces covers in practice
Fifty pieces rarely means ordering for one department alone. A general ward nursing team, an ICU team, housekeeping, and lab staff on one hospital floor can each have a modest headcount individually and still clear 50 pieces combined many times over when placed on one purchase order, which is also the structure we recommend in our scrubs and nursing uniform guide: one PO across departments, each with its own line item and spec.
A smaller clinic or a single diagnostic branch with a modest headcount can still place a standalone order at the 50-piece minimum; it’s sized to be accessible to a single department or small institution, not only a full hospital’s combined order.
The reorder policy matters more than the first minimum
The number that actually affects a hospital’s uniform budget over time isn’t the first order’s minimum, it’s what happens eighteen months later when three new joiners need the same scrub in the same colour and fabric. This is where many suppliers quietly change the deal: a small reorder priced at a penalty rate well above the original bulk price, because it falls below their usual minimum.
Ask explicitly, before the first order, how reorders of 5-20 pieces will be priced relative to the bulk rate. A supplier holding your fabric lot and colour reference on file against your account (rather than treating every reorder as a fresh negotiation) is the one who can actually quote a small batch at the bulk price band, because they’re not re-sourcing fabric or re-matching colour from scratch each time.
Planning an order across a multi-department hospital
For a hospital ordering across several departments for the first time, the practical approach is:
- List every department’s garment type and rough headcount on one requirement sheet.
- Confirm department-specific specs (fabric, GSM, colour) against the colour-coding guide you’re already using, or decide one if it doesn’t exist yet.
- Place it as one purchase order with per-department line items, which clears the minimum easily and keeps the fabric lot and colour reference consistent across the whole hospital from day one.
How we handle minimums and reorders
As a hospital uniform supplier, we work from 50 pieces per order for hospital uniform accounts across India.
- A single department or small clinic can order standalone at the minimum.
- Multi-department hospital orders go on one purchase order with per-department specs.
- Reorders of 5-20 pieces, for new joiners between full production runs, quoted at the same per-piece price band as the original bulk order, held against your account’s fabric lot and colour reference.
