Corporate and industrial uniforms for women: Why a generic size chart fails

Corporate and industrial uniforms for women: Why a generic size chart fails

The same fit problem shows up in two very different workplaces. A factory coverall and a corporate formal shirt are unrelated garments, but both are usually specified as “unisex, sizes XS to XXL,” and both fail women staff the same way, for the same structural reason.

This is for HR and procurement teams ordering corporate or industrial uniforms in bulk for a mixed-gender workforce.

The problem is the pattern, not the size

A unisex uniform is cut on one block, scaled uniformly across the size range. It has no waist shaping and no bust allowance, which means the size that fits a woman’s shoulders is usually loose through the middle, and the size that fits her waist is usually tight at the shoulders. This isn’t solved by ordering a different size — it’s the same mismatch at every size on the chart, because the chart was never built for a woman’s proportions in the first place.

On the factory floor, this is more than a comfort issue. A coverall that bags at the waist and pulls at the shoulder is a genuine catch hazard near moving machinery, not just an ill-fitting garment.

What a genuine women’s cut changes

A women’s-fit pattern is a different draft, not the same pattern in smaller numbers:

  • Waist darts or princess seams, so the garment follows the body rather than hanging as a rectangle.
  • A narrower shoulder and armhole, sized to a woman’s frame directly rather than scaled down from a men’s pattern.
  • A separate trouser rise and hip curve for the corporate range, or a tailored waist and hip allowance built into the coverall for the industrial range.
  • Correctly placed pockets and closures, since a straight scale-down often leaves a chest pocket sitting in the wrong position entirely.

Indian sizing specifically

Most generic size charts sold in India, unisex or “women’s,” are built against a different market’s body proportions and never adjusted for Indian buyers. The practical fix isn’t a better chart — it’s a fit sample approved on your own staff before the bulk cut, across your actual size range rather than one middle size, with the size grid built from that sample.

Fabric considerations differ by context

For corporate wear, specify stretch content (a small percentage of spandex or elastane in the poly-cotton blend) for the fitted cut, since a shaped garment with zero stretch restricts movement in a way a loose unisex one doesn’t.

For industrial wear, the fitted cut still needs to meet the same durability and, where relevant, flame-retardant or hi-vis requirements as the men’s coverall — a women’s fit is not a lighter-duty garment, and shouldn’t be specified as if it were.

Ordering both cuts on one purchase order

A workforce is rarely all one gender, and the practical answer is one PO with both cuts specified by headcount, sized separately, rather than two negotiations. Confirm the fabric lot and colour match across both cuts so a unisex and a women’s-fit garment from the same order are indistinguishable in colour, even though the patterns differ.

How we supply women’s-fit uniforms in bulk

We supply corporate and industrial uniforms in both unisex and women’s-fit cuts across India, from 50 pieces per order.

  • Women’s-fit pattern with genuine waist shaping, offered as its own line, not a relabelled unisex size.
  • Fit sample approved on your own staff before the bulk cut.
  • Same durability and safety specification held across both cuts for industrial wear.
  • Colour and fabric lot held on file so both cuts match across reorders.
