Staff and corporate uniform HSN code and GST rate in India

Staff and corporate uniform HSN code and GST rate in India

A reflective jacket has a dedicated HSN subheading that names its own standard. A staff shirt or a pair of uniform trousers doesn’t get that convenience — it’s classified the same way any other garment is, by construction and type, and the GST question is a separate, value-based rule that applies uniformly across almost everything your company will order.

This is for finance and procurement teams who need the HSN code and GST rate for a general staff, corporate, or school uniform order, not a technical safety garment.

There’s no single “uniform” HSN code

Uniform sets aren’t a tariff category on their own. Classification runs on two questions: is the fabric knitted or woven, and what type of garment is it.

  • Knitted or crocheted garments (T-shirts, polo shirts, knitted sweaters) fall under Chapter 61 — a knitted polo shirt sits around HSN 6105, a T-shirt around 6109.
  • Woven garments (formal shirts, trousers, blazers) fall under Chapter 62 — a woven formal shirt sits around HSN 6205, trousers around 6203.

A single uniform order — formal shirt, trouser, and a branded polo for casual days — can legitimately carry three different HSN codes on one invoice, because each piece is a different garment type and construction. Ask your supplier to itemise HSN per line rather than applying one code to the whole order; a single blanket code across mixed garment types is usually wrong, not simplified.

GST rate: the same value-based rule as every other garment

This is where the real confusion happens, because the rule changed. Since the GST rate revision effective 22 September 2025, apparel GST runs on invoiced price per piece, not on the garment type or HSN code:

Invoiced value per pieceGST rate
Up to Rs. 2,5005%
Above Rs. 2,50018%

This replaced the earlier slab (Rs. 1,000 threshold, 12% above it). If you’re working from a rate card, quotation template, or a previous year’s PO that predates September 2025, it’s citing the old rule and needs updating. The slab applies the same way to a school uniform shirt, a corporate formal shirt, and a branded polo — what matters is what you’re billed per piece, not which category the garment falls into.

Why this matters for a bulk order

A corporate uniform programme usually mixes price points: a premium blazer might cross the Rs. 2,500 line while the shirts and trousers stay under it. That means a single order can carry both GST rates simultaneously, correctly, on different line items. Check this at quotation stage rather than after the invoice lands — a supplier pricing a garment close to Rs. 2,500 should be able to tell you which side of the line it falls on, and whether splitting the order structure changes that.

What to put on the purchase order

  • HSN code stated per garment type, not one blanket code for a mixed order.
  • Per-piece invoiced price for each line item, since that decides the GST slab.
  • Confirmation the supplier is quoting against the post-September-2025 rate structure, not an old rate card.
  • GST amount shown separately per line on the invoice, not bundled into a single total.
