Reflective jacket brands in India: hi-vis, tape, and what survives the wash

Reflective jackets are the PPE line buyers think least about and replace most often. They are cheap, they look interchangeable in a catalogue, and they come back six months later with the tape lifting at the edges and the fluorescent ground faded to a dull mustard.

The brand is part of the answer. The tape and the stitching are most of it. Here are the reflective and high-visibility clothing brands that come up most often in Indian bulk procurement, and the three questions that decide whether you are reordering in six months or three years.

The three questions that decide the reorder

Is the tape stitched or heat-glued? Heat-glued tape is faster to make and lifts at the edges after a few industrial washes. Stitched down both edges costs a little more and is the single biggest predictor of whether a jacket survives its first year. Ask, and put the answer in the contract.

Class 2 or Class 3? Class 2 is the sleeveless or short-band garment for yard and warehouse work. Class 3 carries bands on the sleeves, body and shoulders and is what road work, night work and moving-vehicle environments need. Specifying Class 2 where the site needs Class 3 is a real finding, not a technicality.

How many washes does the fluorescent ground hold? The fluorescent colour fades before the reflective tape does. That is the failure mode. Plan a refresh cycle rather than assuming a one-time buy.

The Indian standard for high-visibility warning clothing is IS 15809. Ask for it by number.

The limb bands are the whole point of Class 3. A driver recognises a moving person from the arm and leg motion long before they read a torso stripe.

The brands buyers name most often

Karam

The broad-line Indian PPE manufacturer again, and for the same reason: if Karam already supplies your helmets and harnesses, the hi-vis goes on the same purchase order. Range covers the ordinary industrial and road requirements.

Picked for: single-vendor PPE procurement; sites that want one negotiation, not four.

Udyogi

Udyogi is better known in high-visibility clothing than in most other PPE categories, which is the reverse of how it appears on helmet lists. Strong presence in Indian road, rail and industrial hi-vis.

Picked for: hi-vis as the main line item rather than an afterthought.

Mallcom

One of the larger Indian PPE manufacturers with a significant export business, and body protection is a core category rather than a side line. Buyers tend to rate the price-to-quality position.

Picked for: volume orders where make quality matters and the budget is still real.

3M

Slightly different case. 3M’s presence in hi-vis is largely through Scotchlite reflective material — the tape itself, supplied to garment makers — rather than a finished-jacket range in Indian bulk procurement. If a tender specifies “3M reflective tape”, that is what it means.

Picked for: specifying the tape rather than the garment; premium and long-life requirements.

Venus Safety

An established Indian PPE manufacturer with a body-protection range alongside its better-known head protection. Regularly quoted as the domestic alternative on industrial shortlists.

Picked for: Indian manufacturing volume with a domestic name on the tender.

Heapro

Widely stocked, widely quoted, strong in construction and contractor supply. The value tier of most shortlists, and often the right answer when the requirement is genuinely ordinary and the headcount is large.

Picked for: construction sites, contractor and manpower supply, large simple orders.

Honeywell

The international option, with hi-vis sitting inside a much larger industrial safety catalogue. Premium pricing, globally recognised documentation.

Picked for: MNC plants and international audit regimes.

Vaultex

Common in Gulf and Indian industrial supply and frequently quoted in hi-vis and general PPE. Regularly seen on contractor and oilfield-adjacent supply lists.

Picked for: contractor supply, Gulf-linked procurement, projects mirroring an overseas standard.

Safies

An Indian safety products name that appears regularly in hi-vis and general PPE supply, usually in the value-to-mid tier.

Picked for: value-tier bulk hi-vis where the requirement is standard.

Bellstone

Common in Indian industrial supply catalogues and general safety procurement. Widely available, typically competing on price and stock.

Picked for: small-to-mid orders where availability and price drive the decision.

Why a bulk buyer often skips brands entirely here

Hi-vis is one of the few PPE categories where a stitched-to-order garment from a manufacturer competes honestly with a branded one. The reason is that the two components that matter — the fluorescent fabric and the retro-reflective tape — are bought in, not made by the jacket brand. What the brand adds is consistency of make and a name on the invoice.

That is worth paying for on some sites and not on others. Where it is genuinely worth it: multi-site rollouts that must match, audit regimes that expect a recognised name, and anywhere the garment doubles as a uniform with a logo on it. Where it is usually not: single-site orders in standard colours, where a well-made stitched-tape garment at the same price does the same job for longer.

Ask for both quotes. The gap is often smaller than expected, and it is a decision you can only make once you see the two numbers side by side.
